If you want to haul something behind your vehicle, a trailer hitch allows you to use your vehicle to hook it up to another vehicle or trailer or boat or whatever and pull the other item as you zip down the road. That's a pretty basic definition.

Hitches come in different classes, like Class I, Class II, Class III, Class IV and Class V. The class is a basic easy way to determine a level of weight carrying ability the hitch itself has.
